1. Install an authenticator app: Start by installing an authenticator app on your mobile device. Popular options include Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Authy. These apps generate TOTP codes for your accounts.
2. Scan the QR code: It will typically display a QR code on the screen. Open your authenticator app and choose the option to scan a QR code. Use the app's camera to scan the QR code displayed by the service.
3. Verify the setup: After scanning the QR code or entering the key, the authenticator app will generate a 6-digit verification code. Enter this code into the service to verify that the setup was successful.
4. Store backup codes : In Profile details page, click "Generate new codes", it may offer backup codes that can be used if you lose access to your mobile device. It's a good practice to store these backup codes in a secure location in case they're needed in the future.
5. Use TOTP for authentication: From now on, when you log into the service, you'll need to provide your username/password combination as usual. However, you will also be prompted to enter a TOTP code. Open your authenticator app, locate the entry for the service, and enter the current OTP displayed in the app.
6. Refresh codes: TOTP codes typically expire after a short period, usually 30 seconds. The authenticator app will automatically refresh the code every few seconds, so make sure to use the most recent code when prompted.
By using TOTP-based two-factor authentication, you add an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring both your password and a temporary code generated by your authenticator app for authentication.
